Few instances in hunting offer more shooting than hunting snow geese. With the overpopulation and special seasons, snows are one of the few game birds that you can shoot until your shoulder falls off. And, you'll get goose bumps when the great white tornado of birds swirl down into your decoy spread. Here are a few tips to ensure you'll have to buy more shells after your next snow goose hunt.
Everyone in the hunting party should have a call — and use it! The din of a big flock of snows makes it imperative that everyone blow loud to be heard.
Wave the white flag. Movement counts big in snow goose hunting. Several hunting party members should use a white flag to simulate movement within the flock.
Numbers game. In snow goose hunting more than any other type of waterfowling, decoy numbers mean realism. Plan on putting out hundreds of decoys.
Special season. Reports are that the special conservation season is making a dent in the tremendous overpopulation of snow geese. Keep up the good work.
Permission like the good old days. Ask to deer hunt and the answer is "no." Snow goose hunting, however, is a different story. Farmers often are glad to have someone keeping the destructive geese from their crops. Snow goose hunting is one of the few blood sports that still allow you to freelance.
