I really feel the Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl made a difference here last weekend as the Toms were really glued to the hens and weren't responding well to calls at all in the morning. The afternoon was a different story. Once they spotted Pretty Boy they couldn't resist.
A few quick stories: Keep in mind on the first one that we are hunting on private property, otherwise I wouldn't have tried this. We spotted 5 birds strutting in the middle of a field with many rolling mounds we could use as cover as we approached. We called with no luck so figured it was time to get creative. Went back to the truck and got Pretty Boy and crawled through the various dips in the field until we got to within about 100 yards. At that point I crested the hill and hid behind Pretty Boy and placed him on the stake in view of the gobblers. I then crawled back made a few calls followed by a gobble tube, and the race was on. Two of the five birds peeled off and within about 60 seconds the first bird of the trip was on the ground
The next story is much shorter as we set up in a blind at first light with Pretty Boy and Pretty Girl set out about 15 yards from the blind. After about 30 minutes of firing up these birds on the roost one of the toms flew down and landed 6 yards from the blind directly between Pretty Boy and the blind. Five seconds on the ground and that morning hunt was over. Incredible to see that bird fly down and land that close and start to posture and challenge Pretty Boy.
Last bird of the trip was done the old fashion way. We started to feel guilty that Pretty Boy was giving us an unfair advantage on these territorial Toms!
