If you have a contest for the best hunt using you pretty boy decoy, I
think I have it wrapped up. I just had to share my story with you.
I am not a writer and the only experience that I have is writing police
reports during my 15 year police career.
However, I had an amazing hunt yesterday and one that I feel is unique
as well asentertaining.
I own a 175 acre farm in Livingston County, KY. and have hunted it
hard for 6 days without much luck. Yesterday, after hunting, I wrapped
up my hunt at 12:00 PM and was headed home empty handed once again. So,
I decided that I would drive through my cousins farm and see if there
were any turkeys to look at.
It was 12:30 PM when I arrived at the farm. I drove through the gate
and into a grassy field with rolling hills. As I topped one of the
hills, I discovered six hens and two gobblers in full strut in the
middle of this 100 acre field. I immediately threw the truck in reverse
and backed out of the turkeys sight. I then looked around and
discovered that there was not a tree or bush to be found to set up
beside, and I really didn't think there would be anyway to call the toms
away from the hens anyway.
So I grabbed my pretty boy decoy equipped with a real turkey fan from
last years turkey and decided to apply some of my sniper skills since I
am a certified police sniper. I started paralleling the turkeys from
the opposite side of the knoll. When I thought I was about even with
where I last saw the turkeys, I got down on my hands and knees and
started crawling approximately 75 yards towards the top of the knoll
while pushing my Carry-Lite Pretty Boy tom decoy in front of me while I
was hiding behind it. When I topped the knoll, sure enough there were
the two toms with there necks stretched out looking my way. They
instantly started heading towards me in a trot to investigate the
intruder. I decided to entice them so I gave my decoy a slight twist
left then right to make it look more realistic. This must have worked
because the trot turned into a fast gallop not allowing me much time to
react. I instantly sat down behind the decoy and waited about 10
seconds for them to close the distance. When they hit approximately 25
or 30 yards from me, they stopped and began to strut and drum. I had my
11-87 barrel stuck through the tail fan of my decoy and waited for them
to come out of strut and when they did it was lights out for the 24
pound tom with a 10 1/2 beard. The whole hunt lasted about 10 minutes
after I first saw the birds. This still amazes me that it worked. My
wife Linda has named this hunt the Trojan turkey stalk, instead of using
a Trojan horse, my Trojan horse was a full strut Carry-Lite pretty boy
turkey decoy. I have harvested six turkeys with this decoy so far and
everyone of them have approcahed the decoy on a mission in a dead run.
They are amazingly effective. Hope you enjoy the story. Thanks for an
amazing product.
